Description

It's an entry for `Damaged927's Manga/Anime Repeating Contest OCTOBER 2011
Theme : Ghost <3

"...My name is Maria
A merchant's daughter fair
And I have left my parents
And 2,000 pounds a year

My heart is pierced by Cupid
I disdain all glittering gold
There is nothing can console me
But my jolly sailor bold

Come all ye pretty fair maids
Whoever ye may be
Who love a jolly sailor bold
That ploughs the raging sea..."

OMG I love Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides~
Well..I'm not really sure about the lyrics, but at least that's what I remember after watching it. :XD:

She's one of the antagonist OCs from my 'Virtual World', Marmalade La Quinn.
I created her last year in chibi version :

Bah, it's a bit different from this current version, yes?

This whole image feels like it belongs in a storybook about the dangers of mermaids. I really think that it is the expression of the mermaid that says it all, particularly with that head-tilt. The detail-work in the scales is phenomenal. The use of cool, pale colours and indistinct lines really gives a ghostly, eerie aura. In addition, I quite like the wavy movements clearly shown by the mermaid's hair to reinforce the underwater atmosphere. Light plays an important part here, making a frame around the mermaid, forcing you to stare into her curious eyes.

I only find a problem with the line-work in this piece. The mermaid's left ear and left forearm have oddly distinct lines in comparison to the rest of her, which is stands out a bit, as the majority of the other distinct lines are on the skull.

Overall, I really like this. Excellent work.
